Armed police on the streets will always be a reality in the UK, and they'd have become a fact of life even without Monday's attack in Manchester.
That's the view of former Metropolitan Police officer Michael Smith, who spoke to Sam Delaney after armed officers were deployed on streets across the country.
He told Sam Delaney it actually took longer than he thought it would for armed officers to be deployed, but it won't stop terrorists or other criminals from doing what they want to do.
He believes it's inevitable there will be an increase of young British people being shot or injured by police, and that will cause more complaints, riots and problems on the streets. He added there are some police officers he categorically would not trust with a firearm.
