A baby born with excess limbs in India has been saved by a surgeon, before his family could throw him into a river.

The baby was born to Kuli Bai at her home in north India, in a village named Pindwara, according to Al Arabiya English.

The family were shocked at the sight of the baby and took the decision that it should be killed, according to reports.

However it did not take long for the news of the unusual baby to spread and when a surgeon heard about it he decided something must be done.

Bahrat Pal Danda quickly sent an ambulance out to the 22-year-old woman and her baby.

The pair were taken to the Matra Chhaya Hospital where the 35-year-old surgeon works and staff at the hospital were able to remove the extra limbs from the baby.

The extra limbs had been caused by a parasitic twin forming within the foetus.

The hospital did not charge the family for the operation and the baby is said to be recovering well.
