The gay character planned for Disney's Beauty and the Beast  seems to be something of a stereotype, according to an entertainment critic.

Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, of the Daily Dot, spoke to Julia Hartley-Brewer after plans for the character, called LeFou, came to light.

Baker-Whitelaw said that, while it's "very positive for Disney to include a gay character," the character they have chosen "seems like a negative stereotype, he’s the sidekick to the villain and has this possessive crush."

She believes "it would be a lot more helpful to see a character who gets a happily ever after" in the film and perhaps a more "straightforward gay character."

But Baker-Whitelaw also thinks Disney are “testing the waters with this one, it's such a minor role I don't think if people wanted to boycott it...it wouldn’t make much of a dent in the films numbers."
