In an announcement which made headlines the world over, Theresa May has said no ministers or Royal Family members will attend the World Cup in Russia.

But, behind all the sound and fury, perhaps we shouldn't get too excited. After all, the World Cup has been boycotted several times before.

In fact the World Cup has been used as, well, a political football several times before. Right from the start, countries have been boycotting the tournament as a means of taking a stand on all manner of issues.
