A car has crashed into a bus while being chased by police in north Manchester.

The incident took place in Newton Heath, just a few minutes' walk from the Manchester City football stadium.

The car, a Seat Leon, ploughed into the back of a Stagecoach bus on Thursday afternoon. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police subsequently confirmed the car was being chased by police at the time of the collision.

The occupants of the car tried to flee the scene following the crash, but one man has been arrested, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Police are now searching for others who are believed to have been in the vehicle. A police helicopter was seen yesterday as officers carried out their search.

Phil Beswick, who was driving the bus at the time of impact, said: “They must have been doing 70 or 80mph and they hit the back of me.

“There was a little old lady and a young woman on the bus at the time. Nobody was hurt, which is the main thing.”
