The man appointed by Brussels to oversee Britain's exit from the EU is a "serious negotiator" who will be "no pushover", says Labour MP Gisela Stuart.

French former government minister Michel Barnier, 65, was yesterday appointed to head up the European Commission's Brexit negotiations. He will take up his post on October 1.

Mrs Stuart, MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, worked alongside the experienced French politician framing the European constitution in the early-2000s

"They have appointed a serious negotiator," she told Julia Hartley-Brewer.

"He absolutely understands the inner workings of the European Union.

"He will not be a pushover, he will be quite a tough negotiator.

"But he will be one who focuses on the best interests of all the players."
