The Labour Party has confirmed former MP Frank Doran has passed away at the age of 68.

Doran represented Aberdeen South from 1987 to 1992, losing his seat to the Tories in the election of that year.

He was re-elected to represent Aberdeen Central in 1997 and later Aberdeen North before choosing to stand down in the general election of 2015.

Doran served as the shadow minister for energy and sat on the Culture, Media, and Sport select committee during his time as an MP.

He was a prominent campaigner for improving the health and safety requirements for offshore workers after the Piper Alpha disaster of 1988, where an explosion and resulting oil and gas fires killed 167 people.

He leaves behind two sons and a wife, former Labour MP Dame Joan Ruddock.
