A former Newcastle United football coach has been charged with a total of 29 historial child sex offences.
George Ormond has been charged by Northumbria Police today, and is due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on June 9.
The charges relate to offences which allegedly took place between 1973 and 1998, and are part of Operation Tide, Northumbria Police's investigation into claims of historical child sex offences.
Assistant Chief Constable Darren Best was quoted as saying: "Our specially trained officers have been supporting those who have taken the hugely brave step of speaking to us.
He added: "Our investigations are continuing and we urge anyone who may have been a victim of abuse or has any information about suspected abuse within any sporting community to come forward and report it to us."
