Actor R Lee Ermey, best known for his role as the terrfying Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the film Full Metal Jacket, has died.

Ermey's manager said the 74-year-old passed away from pneumonia-related complications yesterday.

The retired US Marine appeared in around 60 films, often in military-related roles. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam War film.

Ermey was initially hired as a technical advisor on the film, but Kubrick was so impressed with his demonstration of a drill instructor's role that he was offered the part.
