John Bercow wants people to think of him as leading the charge against Donald Trump, says his own biographer.
Yesterday (Monday) the House of Commons Speaker said that Mr Trump should not be allowed to speak in Parliament during his state visit. After recieving criticism for his comments he defended himself, saying he acted "honestly and honourably."
Political journalist Bobby Friedman told Sam Delaney: "John Bercow does like being in the headlines, he does like being the centre of attention.
“He’s probably hoping for a tweet from Donald Trump sometime soon," he added. “He wants to be the person who people think of as leading the charge against Donald Trump
“He doesn’t really care about making enemies. I think he probably won’t care too much about upsetting [Theresa May]."
Friedman also commented on why Bercow took the role of speaker: “Frankly he has annoyed so many senior people in the Conservative party that he released he had no chance whatsoever of achieving high office, he knew he had to do something else."
