Government 'always dismissed me a funny old fart,' Lord Heseltine tells Julia Hartley-Brewer

Lord Heseltine has said the Government and right-wing media will dismiss him as "a funny old fart" in the wake of his sacking after his vote in the House of Lords.

The Tory peer, who served in the Cabinet under Margaret Thatcher and was Deputy Prime Minister under John Major, was dismissed as an advisor to Theresa May after he voted in favour of an amendment to ensure Parliament gets a "meaningful" vote on the terms of the final deal.

In an interview with Julia Hartley-Brewer, he said the Government will pour scorn on his views now he is out of the tent.

He said: “They have dismissed me as a funny old fart and that’s what they’ll do. The hatchet boys of the right-wing media will rubbish me, like they did John Major.”

Fortunately, he said, stations like talkRADIO will allow him to speak directly to the people.

Turning to the wider picture, the Tory grandee said: "The European people are not idiots, they read what the British people are saying and arguing.

"They read the Daily Mail, and if they read that sort of newspaper's piddling propaganda against Europe, they say 'why the hell don’t we get rid of them? They’re just a pain in the butt.'"
