A motorcyclist was caught by a speed camera in the United Arab Emirates travelling at 172 mph - two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

The speed limit on the road the motorcyclist was travelling on is 75 mph, according to Gulf News.

The driver has been contacted by the police about the issue and his motorbike has also been seized.

But Major Mohammad Al Shehi, head of detectives and traffic control at Sharjah Police, says it is common for drivers in the country to continue speeding even after punishment.

Speeding fines can be given up to £615 along with points on the driver's licence and seizure of the vehicle for up to 60 days.

Shehi added that a safety campaign has now been launched by the police in an attempt to bring incidents of speeding down.
