Nine people in the city of Fort Lauderdale have been arrested after being filmed looting a shoe store even as Hurricane Irma bore down on the Florida coast.

A camera crew from a local news outlet, Local 10 WPLG, captured the moment a group of people appeared to break a window to gain access to the shop called Simon's Sportswear.

The group appear to flee the scene on Sunrise Boulevard, with some carrying bags of shoes from the store.

The news outlet published the footage, and it garnered an immediate reaction from several branches of local law enforcement, who warned looting either during or in the wake of the hurricane would not be tolerated.

Hours after it was published, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department confirmed the arrests of three teenagers and six adults.

The nine face charges of burglary during a natural disaster.

At least four people have died and more than five million left without power as Hurricane Irma moves northward towards Tampa.
