The NYPD has started an internal investigation after a video emerged which appears to show a police officer repeatedly punching a teenager in the head.

The teenager had been accused of attempting to steal a bike by people nearby who had flagged down police, according to CBS News.

Police claim the teenager had knocked an officer down and grabbed him around the neck.

In the video the teenager is seen on top of one police officer and another officer is above the teenager, punching him.

As this happened those nearby called out for the incident to stop.

Eventually police were able to arrest the teenager and handcuffed him on Friday (October 6).

He was arrested on charges which included resisting arrest and assault.

CBS New York claims he is a suspect in many armed robberies which took place last year.
