Twitter users have angrily reacted to Marine Le Pen over a series of tweets in the wake of the shooting in Paris.

On Thursday night, a policeman was shot dead and two more were injured after a gunman opened fire on the Champs-Elysee.

In response to the attack, the leader of the far-right Front National party, a candidate in France's upcoming presidential election, used Twitter to release a stream of messages on Friday morning, many of which were pushing her campaign.

In one of the messages, Le Pen described Islamism as a "monstrous" ideology.

Twitter users in France didn't take kindly to this - and many suggested Le Pen's description of Islamism was ironic.
