A Mumbai police officer has been suspended after a video emerged of traffic officers towing a car with a woman inside who was breastfeeding her baby.

A video of the incident which is believed to have taken place on Friday (November 10) was filmed by someone passing by.

Police say the reason the car was towed was because it had been left in a no-parking area, according to the International Business Times.

The Times of India reported that traffic constable Shashank Rane informed local police and the police control room that both the woman and her partner were allegedly attempting to stop him from "doing his duty” of towing the car away.

But the woman in the car has claimed "my husband requested the traffic cop to take the fine amount and release our car. Our child is unwell and we wanted to rush to a doctor. However, the traffic cop was adamant and did not listen to us."

She also claimed that there were two other cars stopped in the same no-parking area which were not towed away on purpose.

The incident, in which the husband repeatedly asked the officers to stop towing the car, was only resolved after local police officers attended the scene.

The future of the suspended police constable will be decided following an inquiry about the matter.
