Two Polish men who threw bacon at worshippers in a north London mosque have been jailed for eight months.
Piotr Czak-Zukowski and Mateusz Pawlikowski hurled two rashers of Tesco's bacon around the Al-Rahman mosque in Camden, and put a third in a caretaker's shoe.
The pair had reportedly been drinking heavily at Oktoberfest before they attacked the mosque just before evening prayers. They were arrested near the venue on suspicion of inciting racial hatred.
Court News reports that the pair were assaulted by Muslim prisoners during the month they spent in custody prior to sentencing. They were held in custody "for their own safety."
During the trial, the court heard that the two men committed a "hate crime at the very top level. It is Islamophobia.
"These two were completely and utterly drunk. They entered a mosque, which they are prohibited from doing while drunk.
"Not only have they entered, they then insulted worshippers just before evening prayers.
"They have with them rashers of bacon which they throw on the floor in a holy place of worship."
