Priti Patel resignation: 'This is more cock-up than conspiracy' says Iain Duncan Smith

Patel resigned over her unauthorised meetings with Israeli politicians

Thursday, November 9, 2017

Iain Duncan Smith has dismissed the idea of Priti Patel's resignation as being part of a Remain conspiracy.

The former International Development Secretary resigned amid the political fallout following her unauthorised and undisclosed meetings with Israeli politicians.

Julia Hartley-Brewer asked the MP for Chingford and Woodfood Green about suggestions that the resignation is part of a conspiracy, given Patel was pro-Brexit.

The former Work and Pensions Secretary responded: “No, this is more cock-up than conspiracy.

"She accepts she had made a series of errors of judgement...and failed to be clear with whom she had met in talking to Israeli’s about getting aid to support Syrian refugees but in the Golan.

"The problem is we don’t recognise Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights, and this was where she was trespassing on delicate foreign affairs.

"Having done that – and then not having been clear about it – left her with no other alternative but to resign.

"I’m a great believer in the usual story that most of these conspiracy theories are a little bit too tortured to believe. This is more a case of cock-up than conspiracy."

Listen above.
