Sutton's pie-eating goalkeeper explains his stunt was 'just a bit of fun'

Last night Sutton United played against Arsenal in the FA Cup

'Who ate all the pies?' That's a common terrace chant at football matches when a player is considered to be, shall we say, larger than average.

But during the FA Cup fifth round match between Sutton United and Arsenal, BBC cameras offered a clear answer to that question.

Sutton's reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was filmed on the substitutes' bench eating a large pastry-based product during the second half of last night's game – and he spoke to Paul Ross this morning to explain why.

Shaw, whose rather portly figure had attracted numerous comments on social media in the days leading up to the game, wanted to assure fans that his stunt wasn't to be taken seriously.

He told Paul Ross: "It was merely just a bit of fun and just what we’re all about at Sutton United football club.

“There’s mixed opinions on what I did, it really was just a bit of fun, I didn’t want to overshadow what the boys had done."

Non-league Sutton eventually lost to Premier League Arsenal 2-0 on the night, but acquitted themselves well. Perhaps thankfully, Wayne was not called into action.
