A school in America has defended its use of pepper spray on students as a law enforcement exercise.

Barberton High School - located in the town of Barberton, south of Cleveland - lined up 11th grade students and had an instructor spray them as part of a class in law and public safety.

Amid some criticism of this decision online, the school has said the students volunteered to be pepper-sprayed, with parents signing permission slips to allow it.

The video of the pupils undergoing the exercise was posted onto YouTube, and it made for some uncomfortable viewing as the students appear to be in some degree of pain.
