'We can’t live our lives worrying about offending people' - James Whale disputes gender neutral language with journalist Kaite Walsh

James Whale got a lesson in the correct terms of language from a prominent journalist

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

James Whale had an interesting discussion with a prominent journalist about the usuage of gender-neutral language.

This follows a Freedom of Information request which revealed a number of undergraduates at Hull university have been told to use "gender-sensitive" language or risk losing marks.

In explaining this concept to James and Ash Gould, journo and author Kaite Welsh claimed it was perfectly with the rights of the universities and their student unions to employ the tactic.

She also said certain newspapers could be banned from campus if they don't employ gender-neutral language.

She said: "I don’t want to ban any papers from campuses. If a democratically-elected SU want to do boycott it, that’s more within their rights.

"You're not removing all the platforms a person could speak at, you just saying you don't want them there and that's acceptable."

However, James said this was stupid because it was limiting the news people would be able to see.

He inisisted: "We can’t live our lives worrying about offending people."

Listen above.
