Robert Peston thinks Theresa May could be replaced

Author Robert Peston has warned that if Damian Green is forced to resign, Theresa May will be replaced as leader of the Conservatives.

Several people have come forward accusing MPs of sexual harassment in Westminster. May's deputy Green has been accused of having porn on his computer in 2008 when his office was raided by counter terrorism officers.

Julia Hartley-Brewer asked Robert Peston, political editor of ITV News and author of WTF, a book about recent politics, about whether he thought the Prime Minister could stay in power.

He said: "I think [the situation] feels very, very fragile. Certainly there is certainly a risk that if enough MPs are deprived of the whip that [May] would find it impossible to govern. I think that’s a less likely outcome than that she herself is replaced.

"I think the big risk to her is that her authority is so undermined that actually the Conservative Party takes the view look she has not got a grip of this and we just need somebody to show stronger leadership."

He believes this could happen if Green "were forced to resign I think at that point her grip on office is desperately shaken and I think a lot of the Tory MPs at that point would say time for a change time for a new leader."
