Dozens of Somali refugees were shot dead in the Red Sea on Thursday evening, it has been confirmed.

Yemen officials confirmed there had been an incident, with an official saying the bodies of 33 refugees had been taken to hospital in the port city of Hodeida. 35 people were admitted with wounds.

Unconfirmed reports have stated the source of the attack to have been carried out by an Apache helicopter.

The Hodeida province has been subjected to airstrikes over the last two years since a Saudi-led coalition joined the country's ongoing civil war in support of Yemen's government, leading airstrikes against rebel forces in the city.
