The Big Debate: Do we need smells?

The jury remains out on whether smells are a necessary evil

Friday, May 20, 2016

Jon Holmes talks scents and sticks his nose into the most important issues of the day.

The big olfactory question came after scientific research identified six volatile organic compounds which create bad odours in clothes. The men (and women) in white coats found it is possible to remove the compounds when washing, but low temperatures and some detergents can allow the whiff-makers to linger.

Of course, this makes you wonder, do we even need smells?

Michael, for one, believes all scents must be stopped.

"Smells are just everywhere," he said. "I’m suffering from nasal fatigue and it's all down to smells."

Anthony, on the other hand, thinks pongs are a vital aspect of our lives.

"How can you live without smells?" he asked. "We learn information about each other through smells."
