Derren Brown has revealed he started magic because he was - and still is - very shy.
In the next stage of his multi-award winning career as a mentalist and illusionist, Brown is about to launch a new ride at Thorpe Park - a ghost train which uses virtual reality technology. After taking three years to create, Derren Brown's Ghost Train is in the final stages and will be opening soon.
The magician, who hails from Purley in Greater London, is excited about the new theme park attraction.
"It's a multi-layered experience," he told Paul Ross. "It's part virtual reality, and I'm hoping it will be genuinely surprising at the start.
"It should be a mind-bending - yet terrifying - thrilling thing."
Despite his enthusiasm, however, the illusionist acknowledged he's not always been the most confident person.
"I was very shy, and I still am. Most people [who] get in to magic do so because they don't feel very impressive," he added. "It is the shortest, most fraudulent route to impressing people.
"It is fascinating why we fall for it [magic], so it became important to have a level of honesty as all the interesting stuff about magic you can't talk about."
