'It sends out another strong message' - Stephanie Hirst welcomes Obama order on transgender student rights

The Obama administration orders students to use toilets of their choice

Stephanie Hirst has welcomed US transgender children being able to access toilets which match their identity.

The Obama administration will be ordering US public schools to allow transgender students to visit the toilet which they feel best matches their identity.

The decision escalates the fight for LGBT rights, after North Carolina bought in a law stating people must use toilets based on the gender on their birth certificate, rather than the one they identify with.

Hirst, who transitioned from a man to a woman, has claimed the move by the US is a step in the right direction against transgender discrimination.

"The Obama Administration's letter that went out overnight is a hugely positive thing, it sends out another strong message," she told Julia Hartley-Brewer. "We should support anybody who feels they've got a mismatch between their brain and their body."
