'The old rules don't apply any more,' says polling expert on mixed referendum predictions

Polling expert sheds light on YouGov Polls

Joe Twymon from YouGov explain the role of the polls in the referendum

Polling expert Joe Twyman has shed some light on how the YouGov polls affected the referendum vote.

Twyman, the director of political and social resarch at YouGov, explained how the polls changed in this referendum.

"It was certainly mixed," he told Julia Hartley-Brewer. "Some pollsters did predict Leave would be ahead and indeed our final poll showed a slight move towards Remain.

"Historical precedents stated certain things were expected to happen, but the old rules don't apply anymore.

"It's an illustration of how much the world has changed, and how many people are distrusting and disapproving of the elite.

"It's a wake up call for all of us showing there are great divisions in this country, which the vote helps to highlight perfectly."

"The turnout was monumentally high," he added. "It was representative of people who believed they hadn't had their voices heard until now.

"But If you look at the grids, Remain needed to turn out to vote, it's in those areas they fell short."
