Labour MP Nic Dakin has called for the government to crack down on illegal schools.
More than 100 suspected unregistered schools, many of them reportedly faith-based, have been discovered by Ofsted in the past five months, and Shadow Schools Secretary Dakin insists it’s time something was done about the issue.
He told Julia Hartley-Brewer: “It’s quite shocking that Ofsted discovered this was a problem back in July , when they found a good shedload of these schools operating, and they called on the government to do more about it.
“Now here we are almost a year later and they are finding almost 100 more of these illegal schools and what Sir Michael Wilshaw, the head of Oftsed, said is he think this is the tip of the iceberg.
“There really is a problem here and the government needs to roll up its sleeves and sort it out.”
