A 10-year-old girl has given birth at a hospital in India after being raped and refused abortion.
The baby was delivered by C-section at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Chandigarh this morning (August 17), according to The Times of India.
Doctors took the decision for the baby to be delivered in this way as her pelvic bones are not currently strong enough to withstand labour pains.
The operation lasted for two hours. Both the girl and the baby are said to be in an unstable condition and are to stay in hospital to recover.
GMCH revealed that the baby weighs just 2.2 kilograms so is underweight and is being looked after in an intensive care unit.
When the baby is in a more stable condition it will be given a blood test to determine who the father is.
The girl is also in an intensive care unit for stitches and recovery from delivering the baby.
A lower court had said the girl could not have an abortion in July. The case was then referred to the Supreme Court, however it also agreed with the lower court.
The reason given was that the family had asked the court for the abortion in the 26th week of pregnancy but the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act states abortions can only be performed up to 20 weeks.
