Figures released by parliamentary authorities have revealed that the cost of MPs' fact-finding trips soared by more than 25% to £550,000 last year, with destinations including New York, Boston and Italy. 

Politicians travelled the globe looking into everything from young offenders to overseas trade, all funded by the tax-payer.
