Police say a 50-year-old woman has been rescued after her brother locked her in a dark room for 15 years in Goa, India

Bailancho Saad, a women’s rights organisation, tipped off the police about the woman who was in her parents’ home, according to Today.

Sunita Verlekar was rescued on Tuesday (July 11) and has now been taken to a hospital, police said.

She will later be admitted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour.

Local media claims Verlekar went to her parents' house 15 years ago after her relationship with a man broke down because she found he was already married.

Her family reportedly locked her in the room because they believed she was acting strangely.

It is claimed she was given food and drink through a window.

No arrests have been made but a police officer said: “The statement of the woman’s family members have been recorded and we are speaking to neighbours."
