A five-year-old girl who was abandoned in a bus terminal led police to her home, where they discovered her mother's body.

The girl was left by her dad in New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal on Monday morning.

Members of the public alerted the police to the girl, who spoke mostly Spanish, when they saw her sitting alone.

When the girl was discovered by police, she told them her father had told her to stay where she was.

Police then went to the girl's home to talk to her mother, but instead found her body, law enforcement sources told The New York Post.

News site patch.com also reported that there were signs of a struggle in the apartment.

Her father, Elmer Gomez Ruono, is now being searched for by authorities. He is described as being a "person of interest’’ in the case.

Police believe the family had moved from New Jersey just a few days ago.

Another "person of interest" was also seen being escorted from Port Authority police station on Monday afternoon, and police describe the situation as a “love triangle gone bad.”
