Oscar-nominated actress Salma Hayek has told talkRADIO listeners all about her friendship with music legend Prince, working with her heroes and her joy at "not playing the queen of the drug cartel" in her latest movie Tale Of Tales

Directed by Matteo Garrone, Tale of Tales is released in the UK on 17 June. It is set in three kingdoms, and is based on a series of Italian fairytales. Hayek plays the Queen of Longtrellis, who embarks on a jealous quest in this fantasy-drama.

"It was very strange, because I don't usually get approached by my favourite directors in the world," she told Paul Ross.

"When you're Mexican the closest thing you can get to [playing] a queen is the queen of the drug cartel, so I was so excited to be able to do a period piece."

Hayek, who was nominated for an Academy award for best actress for 2002 movie Frida, worked with Prince in 2005 on the video for his single Te Amo Corazón.

She told Paul Ross that she is still struggling to cope with the singer's death in May.

"He was a very close friend of mine, and I still cannot recover from this tragedy," she said.

"He was very special, very unique. I feel very privileged because he was somebody who was very private.

"I was able to get to know him in a way that very few people got to know him.

"He was generous beyond description and always very supportive.

"He really inspired me to do a lot of things in my life."
