China has alarmed its neighbours after installing military weapons on the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) says it has been closely watching construction on the Fiery Cross, Mischief and Subi reef islands since the summer.

They highlighted structures on Hughes and Gaven Reefs, which they claim resemble anti-aircraft guns.

While Beijing admitted to building the facilities, the foreign ministry spokeperson claimed it was "legitimate and lawful" because they have sovereignty over the islands.
