Two people have been injured by a man wielding a hammer and shouting "allahu akhbar" in eastern France.

The pair - reportedly both women - were left injured, one with an injury on the back of her head, after being attacked in the town of Chalon-Sur-Saone.

The incident took place in a public park in the centre of the town, which lies north of Lyon and close to the Swiss border.

The assailant was reported to be on the run on Friday afternoon, and a helicopter was deployed to fly over the city in search for the man.

Local media is reporting the two women have already given statements to the police. The authorities are treating the incident as a possible terror attack, but have not ruled out the possibility the attacker was deranged, according to Reuters.
