Angela Merkel has called for a ban on the burqa "wherever possible," according to the DPA international newswire.
In August she claimed that fully-veiled women are not able to integrate into society, according to reports.
She also backed Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière when he suggested a partial ban was likely to be introduced.
Merkel's call also comes after a poll conducted by German broadcaster ARD earlier this year, which suggested that 81% of the German population wanted the burqa to be banned in public.
Germany has witnessed a huge amount of immigration in recent months, with Merkel having previously encouraged migrants to come to her country. The influx in refugees has been accompanied by a rise in instances of Islamophobia.
