The self-styled 'Hitler of the Philippines' has fired an extraordinary homophobic slur at his own country's human rights chief.
Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte aimed at the attack at Chito Gascon, head of the Human Rights Commission (HRC), for bringing attention to the deaths of teenagers during the government's much-criticised 'war on drugs'.
Duterte's flagship offensive against drug traffickers, which began in summer 2016, has led to thousands of deaths, many of them young men, and prompted regular criticism from the HRC, which suggests police are killing innocent teenagers.
On Saturday (September 17) Duterte asked publicly of Gascon "why are you so fixated on the question of young people, above all boys? Are you a paedophile?
"Why are you distraught about teenagers? I have my doubts. Are you gay or paedophile?"
In a response to ABS-CBN News Gascon demanded the president should withdraw his "hurtful langauge." However Duterte has yet to apologise.
Duterte has also reiterated that he will not abandon his campaign against drug traffickers, but insisted that "teenagers who haven't done anything wrong" won't be caught up in the crackdown.
Earlier this year it was claimed that the war on drugs had led to 8,000 deaths, with a Filipino lawyer demanding that the International Criminal Court in the Hague open proceedings against Duterte and his government.
Duterte has consistently railed against coverage of his key policy initiative, and even threatened to humiliate the children of the"oligarch" who publish critical reports about it.
