Thousands of people have paid tribute to the lives of fallen soldiers on Twitter to mark the 98th anniversary of tne end of the First World War.

Hundreds of thousands of British soldiers lost their lives in the First World War, and November 11 marks the anniversary of the armistice treaty signed by the Allies and Germany at Compiègne in France to end hostilities on the Western Front. 

The treaty came into effect at eleven o'clock in the morning on November 11, 1918, and to mark the occasion there is a two-minute silence on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month every year.
