An Australian MP has been criticised for uploading an image of himself with a gun on Facebook, which appeared to make fun of environmentalists.

George Christensen has been reported to the police over the photo which was posted on Saturday (February 17), according to The Straits Times.

The photo was captioned "you gotta ask yourself, do you feel lucky, greenie punks?" The conservative politician has claimed this was a Dirty Harry film reference, because it includes a police officer who fights "people who are conducting illegal activity, such as the greens are."

Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has slammed the online image as "very inappropriate" and it has been described as insensitive, coming so soon after the Florida school shooting.

The Green Party reported Christensen to the police over the photo and Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has claimed she has been sent a threatening email by a supporter of the politician.

She told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation "guns are not a joke" and this is especially the case "in the wake of the massacre in the US only last week."

The politician has now removed the post from Facebook but said: "I'm not going to be moralised to by these extreme greens who put the livelihoods, safety and lives of other people at risk."

He added that his post was not linked to the Florida shooting and pointed out that it was about "illegal activism on mine sites."

The Liberal National Party MP has previously often hit out at environmentalists, particularly when protests have taken place such as tying themselves to machinery and blocking mining.
