UK border patrols halted more than 56,000 attempts by migrants to enter the UK last year.
The figures, which amount to roughly 153 daily attempts, were released to the BBC after a Freedom of Information request.
The broadcaster say this number is down from the figures in 2015, but still remain the second highest in the last seven years.
The Home Office say the figures make clear the approach to securing the UK’s borders are working.
The information comes in the same week up to 200 migrants were involved in violent clashes in Calais, which prompted The Road Haulage Association to warn lorry drivers are being put at risk.
