BBC pay: Gary Lineker tops list of highest earners

Gary Lineker was the BBC's top earner

Tuesday, July 2, 2019

Sports broadcaster Gary Lineker has retained his title as the BBC’s highest paid presenter, earning £1.75 million.

Former BBC radio DJ Chris Evans - who left the broadcaster in December - was the only other star taking home more than £1 million in 2018.

Many male presenters, including Huw Edwards, Jeremy Vine and Nicky Edwards, took pay cuts last year after outrage over their salaries.

But the BBC's sports department increased the amount it paid its top-tier employees.

Retired footballer Alan Shearer received £440,000, Jermaine Jenas was paid £210,000 and Ian Wright earned £205,000.

The top earning woman was Radio 2 breakfast presenter Zoe Ball, who earned £370,000 - significantly less than Evans earned for the same job.

Ms Ball joined Radio 2 hosts Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz as the first women to reach the BBC’s list of top ten highest paid.

Ms Winkleman earned £370,000 in 2018/19, with Ms Feltz on £355,000.

Zoe Ball was the BBC's highest female earner

The BBC’s overall gender pay gap narrowed from 7.6 per cent in 2018 to 6.7 per cent.

BBC director-general Tony Hall said the broadcaster had "turned the corner on gender pay"

"When we first published the figures for top talent, there was a 75:25 split between men and women," he said.

"The projection for 2019/20 is now 55:45. This is significant change. The task is not complete, we are not complacent, but we are well on our way."

The BBC’s annual pay disclosure includes staff who earn more than £150,000 a year.

It does not cover those employed by production companies making content for the broadcaster.
