BBC presenter Simon Reeve has told talkRADIO he's grateful to have covered Turkey at such a crucial time in the country's history.

Reeve spoke to talkRADIO about his new BBC Two documentary Turkey with Simon Reeve, and told Penny Smith "I'm quite keen to challenge cliches, but I ended up embracing quite a few of them in Turkey.

"It's a crossroads, it is beautiful and exotic, a land of extremes, a troubled country.

"We'd planned to make this TV series about my journey around Turkey before the failed coup, but ended up arriving fairly soon after.

"It felt like a really important time to be there, and I'm not the first person by any means who reckons Turkey is one of the most important countries in the world because it's at the heart of many issues.

"It matters, and I set out on a journey around the place to learn more about it."

Turkey with Simon Reeve airs on BBC Two.
