Today it was announced that Radio 2 broadcaster Brian Matthew had died - only it to emerge that he is actually still alive.

The BBC reported that Matthew had died during the night, after they were informed of the news by a close family friend.

It has now been annouced that the broadcaster is still alive, but is critically ill in hospital.

A spokesman for the BBC said: "We were informed by close family and friends that Brian had passed away in the night. They have since been in contact to say that he remains critically ill.

"We will update with more information when we have it. Our thoughts remain with his family at this very difficult time."

Matthew presented his last show in November for Radio 2. He'd presented Sounds of the 60s since 1990.
