Police call for witnesses after a body is found in enflamed car

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service discovered the body after being called to the fire

Police are appealing for information after a body was found in a car which had been set on fire near Sunderland.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service had been called to the fire around 12:50am on Tuesday morning to put out the blaze consuming the car. 

In doing so, workers discovered the body inside of the car at the scene in Shiney Row, in the town of Houghton Le Spring.

Enquiries are ongoing, with the death of the individual currently being treated as unexplained. 

Extra police officers have been deployed to the neighbourhood to reassure the locals.
