The body of a suspected stowaway has been found in a south London garden after falling from a jet.

Police were called to an address in Offerton Road, Clapham, on Sunday following the discovery of the male's body at 3.39pm.

It is believed that the man fell from the landing gear of a Kenya Airways flight as it prepared to land at Heathrow Airport, after a nine-hour journey from Nairobi.

A bag, water and some food were discovered in the landing gear compartment of the plane when it arrived at the airport, the Met Police said.

A post-mortem will be carried out in due course, the force said, and the age of the individual has yet to be determined.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Inquiries are being conducted with the Met's southern central command unit and its aviation policing command.

The Met said it would also be liaising with the airline and international authorities.

Although rare, a body has fallen from a plane before.

In 2012, Mozambique-born Jose Matada died after falling from the undercarriage of a flight approaching Heathrow from Angola.

The 30-year-old died with a single pound in his pocket, and he was not reported missing.
