Boris Johnson is to meet the husband of a woman jailed in Iran to discuss the idea of diplomatic protection being offered to her.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been in jail in the country since 2016, accused of plotting to overthrow the regime in Tehran.
A blunder by the Foreign Secretary – suggestions she may have been training journalists on her trip, when she was actually on holiday – may have worsened her situation by exposing her to the possibility of a five-year prison sentence.
Since then, he has apologised for any “distress” or “suffering” caused by this, and is due to meet Richard Ratcliffe to discuss the options for his wife.
He is expected to discuss the provision of diplomatic protection to Nazanin, as well as concerns over her health and wellbeing.
It is also believed his upcoming trip to the country will be mentioned in the conversation – Ratcliffe has called on the Foreign Secretary to allow him to accompany the envoy to Iran.
