BREAKING: Student who planted bomb on Jubilee Line sentenced to 15 years

Friday, May 26, 2017

The student who planted a homemade bomb on the Jubilee line has been jailed for 15 years.

Following a trial at the Old Bailey, Damon Smith was found guilty of possessing an explosive with intent.

He had said he'd planted the device and pled guilty to perpetrating a bomb hoax, but had intended it to work as a smoke bomb - an assessment which was rejected by the jury.

In October 2016, Smith had placed the explosive in his backpack and left it behind at North Greenwich station.

It had originally been treated as lost property, until the driver noticed wires protruding from it and sounded the alert.

The court had heard how Smith had taken a keen interest in weapons, which was thought to be connected to his Asperger Syndrome.
