Business guru Theo Paphitis has given talkRADIO a bullish take on Brexit, suggesting the EU is a "failed project" and we're better off out of it.

Speaking to James Max on the day Britain triggers Article 50, the former Dragon's Den star added that British people have always been "early adopters" and Brexit continues this fine tradition.

However, he sounded a note of caution, saying the only thing that can scupper the secession process is incompetence on the part of our politicians - pointing to the recent Budget debacle as an example of his concerns.

Although many people believe today's activation of the Brexit process is the first step on the road to ruin, Paphitis believes "we will come out the other side and we will come out the other side stronger and better" - although the two-year negotiation period will be tough.

He added that there is "a lot of business out there for the UK to attract but both ways", adding "I’m sure our relationship will absolutely mend over time."

Although Brexiteers have come in for fierce criticism from the Remain campaign for voting to split with Brussels, Paphiti believes now is the time to come together.

He said: “This is a nation certainly when the back is up against the wall we pull together, we take very serious things in our stride, we’re organised. I’m pretty certain the country will unite."

However, he continued "we mustn’t listen too much to our politicians, who we all know think firstly about themselves and then their parties."
