Brexit: German MEP accuses Michel Barnier of ‘punishing’ Britain as negotiations continue

Hans-Olaf Henkel claimed the EU chief negotiator sought to make an example of Britain

A German MEP has leveled accusations of trying to “punish” Britain as the Brexit negotiations continue.

Hans-Olaf Henkel gave an interview for The Times where he claimed the EU's chief negotiator and the Brexit co-coordinator for the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, are trying to make the UK withdrawal a catastrophe in order to deter other countries from making the same decision.

Henkel, who is a member of the Liberal Conservative Reformers (LKR) party, urged his fellow MEPs to not listen to either, insisting they sought to “make a mess” of Brexit.

He said: “This is a terrible situation for all of us.

“Verhofstadt now wants to punish the British, full stop. My impression is Barnier wants to do the same.

"They would seek to ensure Brexit is such a catastrophe that no country dares to take the step.

"My position is the EU must accommodate Britain, but it will require give and take from both sides.”
