A leading British professor has claimed Brexit is starting to look like a coup d'etat.

Professor Anthony Clifford Grayling gave an interview to partners of La Tribune in France, and it was subsequently published on the paper's website.

In it, he claims the "absence of debate" and the Government's attempts "to move forward before the public realise they're improvising" have made it seem like a takeover.

The professor, who is also an author and received a CBE in the 2017 New Years honours list, said the "nature" of last year's referendum vote made the subsequent result "politically illegimate."

Grayling also revealed he was ashamed of how Nigel Farage acted "like a hooligan" in the European Parliament, saying he and other members of UKIP had shown a very ugly side to politics.
